Denotation

The magazine shows a colourful photograph a young rapper with tattoos. The camera shot is a medium shot. In a the background there is a American flag. The masthead is behind the male, there are cover lines saying “Hip Hop” which suggest to the readers its a hip hop based magazine. There a bar code at the bottom of the magazine.

Masthead

XXL is standing out in the magazine. What makes the masthead stand out is the colour red because you don’t see much red in cover. The front is a sans serif which has not flicks up. the front also used red and white colours to show it’s a famous brand such like “Coca cola”, “Supreme”, “rolling stone” etc.  I think the magazine business named them self “XXL” because so they are a big company, also where else you see XXL is in clothing and when you buy an XXL clothes it means big.  I guess when musicians are on the front cover of XXL it might mean they are a big artist and they are successful.

The target audience for this magazine would people aged (20 -35) who are into hip hop or music/ this is because they would have good knowledge of the music industry, and would be likely to have an interest in American culture because most hip hop artist are from America.

The character in the magazine cover is a rapper called Nas

Composition

The composition of the magazine is that the masthead is behind the rapper. There are some cover lines in front of the rapper and there a bar code at the bottom of the magazine.

Costume

The character is only wearing jeans and chain. The chain suggests to us that he is a rapper because most rapper has got a chain of their icon. The character is not wearing any top because this is could just attract females. The male has also got tattoo which can suggest that he is a rapper because artist such like Rick Ross, Wiz Khalifa, Lil Wayne etc has also got tattoos and they are a rapper.

The non verbal communication for this magazine cover shows that the male is also a fighter which can suggests to his music career that he is a fighter and he is fighting his way to be the champion.

The lighting in the cover shows that it’s daytime because you can see the shine on his body and face.

There an American flag behind the male which suggest to us that he is American.
